The Dream Cafe folks, with whom I’ve been collaborating on an exploration of the effect of new technologies on storytelling, have a blog series on 21st Century Business Models for Artists that is quite edifying to read.

These essays form the bulk of what has been keeping me too busy to produce my own blog material, and as those guys are writers and I’m focused on visual art these days, the articles are much more coherent than any attempt I could make to explain the same things.

Frieke Janssens is another photographer who produces amazing, slightly surreal, work that is well worth looking at. Add this to the list of my inspirations.

I’ve become a podcast fanatic.

In Episode 12 of Focus Ring, there is a really interesting conversation about the McNugget-style layout of image sharing sites like Flickr and Deviant Art: namely, every image is presented to you as a thumbnail before you can find the larger version.

On a site which hosts thousands, if not millions of images, then there’s a very real possibility that your images will primarily be seen at resolutions under 100×100. If it does not strike a person’s interest in that size, they will most likely not click for the bigger version (which is still pretty damn small, as my preferred print size is twice the size of my already-large monitor).

Anyone who has created images will instantly understand the implications of this: there’s simply no way for such a small image to properly express the same sort of nuanced subtlety that a larger image can. The only way to grab anyone’s attention, the metaphor runs, is to wear a low-cut blouse. In other words, if your thumbnails aren’t provocative and alluring, then no one is going to look deeper at the larger scope. Extremely intricate work simply can’t compete on this minor scale.

I’m intrigued by the larger implications of this. As artists earn greater hits and more numerous comments on their least delicate, most simplistic work, they’ll view this as encouragement to move in those directions…..hot blonde having vaginal sex on a bed

Episode 18 of Paul Giguere’s excellent podcast, Thoughts on Photography, does a great job of summarizing the primary points to consider when writing an Artist Statement or a Project Statement. Even better, he concisely explains the difference between the two.

I’ve been listening to Paul’s podcasts practically since the first episode, having discovered him through the LightSource podcast. His podcasts have a gentle, open and unabashedly reflective nature to them which makes them really worth listening to. I often struggle with the question of just how much of my artistic passion should I let show when talking about my photography, and I really think that Paul is an excellent role model for that question: he doesn’t let his passion consume him, but nor does he deny it. With his every spoken word on the subject, you can hear the comfortable acceptance of his love for what he does.

I discovered the truly breathing-taking work of Dave Nitsche through the course he is offering at The Picture Perfect School of Photography, which is titled Conceptual Photography.

The course Dave is offering is precisely the sort of subject matter which I feel does not get taught in traditional art colleges. While most courses focus on “nuts and bolts,” there is a dearth of much-needed courses on what I think of as “hammers and wrenches.” I taught myself many of the fundamentals of picture-taking long before I started actively pursuing a career and education in photography, and have always been surprised at how little attention is given to image designing in these curricula.

While it’s always been troubling to me that so few art schools focus on the business of being an artist, I understand the dynamics which cause that lack. Less comprehensible to me, with my background in technical theater, why art schools never focus on the design and pre-design stages of art making. When I made this argument to a friend of mine, he pointed out a series of DVDs by Ian McCaig, published by Gnomon Workshop. The four discs in the Visual Storytelling series are truly amazing, and incredibly useful teach-by-example lectures which focus entirely on how to flesh out stories in your head, and can easily be generalized to almost any visual field.

Painted Alive – The Fine Art Body Painting of Craig Tracy

My friends, Dawn and Joel of Moonhowler Productions stumbled across an exhibition led by Craig Tracy on their way back from Hong Kong. D&J landed in Florida with the rest of the American staff for Ocean Park’s Halloween Bash, and decided to take the long way back to Milwaukee — the route that goes through New Orleans (where the exhibition was) and Texas.

Auriel, the model I’ve been regularly experimenting with for nearly 6 months now, has been interested in delving into body paint and photography in much the same way that I’ve been exploring light projections. Since I’m worse with a paintbrush than I am with a charcoal stick, I approach this concept nervously. When you look at the sort of work that professional bodypainters can do, it gets a little disheartening: I’m still learning to draw, and these guys have moved past traditional canvas shapes!

I recently had the good fortune of catching a talk by Doug Menuez, a photojournalist currently touring to promote his new book, Transcendent Spirit: The Orphans of Uganda.

I was already familiar with two of his previous works. Heaven, Earth, Tequila documents his quest to discover the history and fables of Tequila, while simultaneously coming to gripes with a recent discovery about his own partially shrouded self. Pictures from the Revolution, sadly now out of print, documents nearly 20 years of progress in the Silicon Valley.

Transcendent Spirit focuses on the story of a dance troupe that comes from Uganda. The members of the troupe are all from the same orphanage. Most members of the Spirit of Uganda are AIDS orphans. Through dance, these children simultaneously raise awareness and funds for AIDS relief in Africa, as well as empowering themselves in a country were few are in control of their own lives.

“There’s something truly powerful about watching [them] dance,” Doug says. “They are literally dancing for their lives.”

Doug has teamed up with Macy’s to produce the book. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of Passport, a fashion show which raises funds for AIDS relief, Macy’s is completely underwriting the book — 100% of profits (if you purchase through Macy’s or through the link above) goes directly to Empower African Children, an educational outreach program which aims to build an internationally-funded school system in Uganda.

In addition to the deeply moving story of Doug’s journey, from first seeing the dance troupe perform, to convincing the Spirit of Uganda troupe to give him access, and then on to his experiences with them, there is another deeply moving story captured in the book. One of the children in the troupe felt the need to find his father’s grave. His father was buried deep inside a war zone, and Doug’s photographs of their journey through this dangerous land, first to find the grave, and then following rumors of the boy’s still-living siblings, is the sort of deeply personal story which most perfectly expresses the widespread conditions of the entire area.

I really, really encourage you to pick up this book. Not only is the cause just, and the photography good, but the book really connected me to the world I live in.

In my quest to teach myself 3D Rendering, I discovered the Vue Tutorials from Geekatplaytm Studio, totally free video tutorials. They do charge a (very reasonable, in my experience) fee to purchase the content used in the tutorials. Since they are primarily creating these tutorials as a form of marketing for their services (which include creating tutorials for client programs), they’re pretty nice.
